On March 30, 1981, Davis' father Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded in Washington, D.C., by John Hinckley Jr., who had become obsessed with attracting the attention of actress Jodie Foster.

For these reasons, Davis slammed Donald Trump in a Facebook post over his "glib and horrifying comment" made at a rally in North Carolina, in which he suggested "Second Amendment people" -- namely gun owners -- could take action against his opponent Hillary Clinton.

"To Donald Trump: I am the daughter of a man who was shot by someone who got his inspiration from a movie, someone who believed if he killed the President the actress from that movie would notice him," she wrote.

Davis added Trump's comment was likely heard not only by many "sane and decent people" but also by someone "locked in his own dark fantasies" looking to use violence to make their mark in the world.

She concluded: "Mr. Trump, words matter. But then you know that, which makes this all even more horrifying."
